This Present Darkness – by Frank E. Peretti

“For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms” – Ephesians 6:12

This gripping novel is set in the small town of Ashton and portrays the everyday struggle between the forces of Good and Evil.  When Hank Busche a local preacher and Marshall Hogan, a journalist uncover a New Age plot to subjugate the community and eventually the whole world, the battle lines are drawn.

Described as awesome, captivating, brilliant and memorable (Amazon.com) ,The Present Darkness  gives insight into the intensity of the spiritual warfare waged against God’s children and the tremendous power of prayer as a weapon and protection against evil.

Peretti vividly describes some of the demons we are up against, amongst others Complacency, Hate, Lust, Deception, Murder, Lawlessness, Jealousy, Fear, Greed, Anger, etc. Do you recognise some of these in the world around you, or, worse, at work in your life? (Also see Galatians 5:19-21) Most of us would be but too familiar with some of them.

As Christians, we should be aware of these things are happening, and that they (the evil spirits) are not mere fantasies – they are very real. We need to recognise that we are facing a powerful enemy whose goals are to destroy and defeat the church of Christ and to lead us away from Christ and back into sin.

However, don’t despair – have faith! We are assured of victory in Christ Jesus – in fact the ultimate victory has already been won! In John 16:33 Jesus says, “… take heart. I have [already] overcome the world.”

Until Jesus returns to this world, we have to engage and battle the forces of Darkness using the mighty power of the Holy Spirit and use His armour to protect us against evil. (1) The Belt of Truth (2) the Breastplate of Righteousness (3) as Footwear the Readiness to spread the Word of God (4) the Shield of Faith (5) the Helmet of Salvation and (6) the Sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God. Lastly, be alert and pray continuously – Ephesians 6:10-20.

  2. Ek het die eerste 5 gelees (tot met Apollyon) en wag nou vir No 6 – Assassins, wat tans nie by boekwinkels verkrygbaar is nie. As dit veel langer neem gaan ek die res van die reeks direk van Amazon bestel. Dis absoluut fascinating.

Hy is ‘n inspirasie vir my.

“I never thought I’d get sick of being a Christian… The more I longed to know God, the more fed up I got with all the Christian ‘stuff’. Where was God really? Would I really find Him in all the religious trappings; my particular Christian culture that told me by word and example what a Christian ought to look like, act like, believe, and do?… But kids grow up and need our own relationship with God, forged in the heart through time and experience, not draped around us by the church we attend. We need to know God for ourselves, not secondhand… Well, don’t worry. I have made it through. Jesus walked with me through every moment, and I could see Him so much more clearly on the other side… My faith is my own, I like where the Lord has brought me, and I won’t be going back…”
